Class C airspace

Flying drones in Rochester's controlled airspace

Much of the City of Rochester lies inside the Class C controlled airspace around Greater Rochester International Airport. Drone flight there is legal, but it needs an FAA authorization before the aircraft leaves the ground, requested by a certified remote pilot.

  • FAA Part 107 Certified remote pilot
  • Insured Certificate on request
  • NYS-Certified SDVOB #269133
  • Level I Certified Thermographer sUAS · Infraspection Institute

Why the listing downtown has no aerials

The authorization is the reason a lot of city listings have no aerial photos. It isn't that the shot is prohibited; it's that filing takes a step most operators would rather not take, so they quietly decline those addresses.

We file them. It's included in the price, and you don't need to know anything about it. Send the address.

Neighbourhoods we fly

  • Downtown, South Wedge, Corn Hill, Park Ave, East Ave, NOTA and the Neighborhood of the Arts
  • Gates, Chili, Brighton and Henrietta corridors near the airport
  • Greece and the lakeshore under the airport's outer airspace

A few places can't be flown at all: special flight rules areas, temporary flight restrictions and some parks. If another operator told you an address can't be flown, send it to us and we'll tell you honestly whether it can.

How it works

Before every flight we check the airspace, request authorization through the FAA's LAANC system or a direct FAA authorization where needed, and fly within the approved altitude. Every flight is under FAA Part 107 by a certified remote pilot, in a Remote ID–compliant aircraft, and we carry liability insurance with a certificate on request.

Common questions

Can you legally fly a drone in Rochester?
Yes. Flight in controlled airspace is legal with an FAA authorization obtained before the flight by a certified remote pilot. We hold the Part 107 certificate and request the authorization ourselves.
Does the authorization cost extra?
No. Airspace authorization is included in every package.
Does it delay my shoot?
Usually not. Most authorizations come back in minutes through LAANC. A few locations need a longer FAA review, and we'll tell you up front.
